The perfusionists at AMR participate in a variety of cardiac and noncardiac
cases which include pediatric and adult perfusion, support for thoracic
aneurysms and liver transplants, and mechanical support devices such as the
ABIOMED, and Thoratec. AMR provides 24- hour coverage, 365 days per year for
all cardiac surgery procedures as a comprehensive perfusion management service.

A Brief Description of What a Perfusionist Does:
Perfusionists construct extracorporeal circuits to allow the cardiothoracic
surgeon to connect the heart-lung machine to an open heart surgery patient.
The heart-lung machine replaces the function of the heart and lungs to provide
a bloodless, motionless surgical field for the surgeon. The perfusionist
ventilates the patient's blood to control the level of oxygen and carbon
dioxide. The perfusionist propels the patient's blood back into the arterial
system to provide nutrient blood flow to all the patient's vital organs and
tissues during heart surgery.
By combining different ECC components, the perfusionist constructs circuits to
treat different patient group populations. The perfusionist employs his
education and knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics and
electronics to support the patient's lifefunctions during various surgical and
life-support procedures.
Many of the types of perfusion and the role of the perfusionist are described
on other pages of our website.
